Sri Lanka's central highlands are a quiet world of tea estates, waterfalls, misty ridges and slow trains. It is one of Asia's easiest places to combine scenic travel with real hiking.
The most scenic train ride
The train from Kandy to Ella winds past tea estates, cloud forest and small stations. Reserve seats in advance, or ride in the cheaper classes for a more local experience.
Sit by an open door or window, but keep your arms and belongings inside while the train moves.
Ella Rock and Nine Arch Bridge
Ella Rock is a rewarding half-day hike with wide views over the valley. Go early, before heat and cloud build up.
The Nine Arch Bridge is best visited at quiet hours, and trains are worth watching from a safe distance.
The night climb
Adam's Peak, or Sri Pada, is a pilgrimage mountain climbed through the night by thousands of steps, to see sunrise from the top.
The season runs roughly December to May. Dress warmly, respect local customs and take your time.
