01 — YAOWARAT

Chinatown after dark

Yaowarat Road turns into a long food street in the evening, with seafood, roast duck, dim sum and dessert stalls.

Arrive around sunset, walk the full length once, then return to the stalls with the longest local queues.

Boat noodles and pad thai
02 — NOODLES

Boat noodles and pad thai

Small bowls of boat noodles, rich with pork or beef broth, are meant to be eaten in stacks. Order several and pay by the bowl.

Pad thai is best fresh off the wok, with lime, crushed peanuts and chilli on the side so you control the heat.

“Follow the queue of locals and you will rarely eat badly.”

Mango sticky rice and beyond

In mango season, warm sticky rice with sweet coconut cream and ripe mango is hard to beat.

Also try coconut ice cream, grilled banana and thin roti with condensed milk from evening carts.
