Banff in summer is stunning and busy. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in particular can be crowded by mid-morning, with parking full and long waits for shuttles. With a little planning you can still enjoy the lakes, the peaks and the quiet trails that most visitors skip.
Start early or go late
The simplest way to beat the crowds at Lake Louise is to arrive very early in the morning, or visit in the evening when day visitors have left. Both times give you softer light for photos and a calmer lakeside.
Check the Parks Canada website for current rules, since access to some lakes is managed through shuttles and reservations.
Moraine Lake and the shuttle system
Access to Moraine Lake is usually controlled to limit traffic, with shuttles and commercial tours replacing private cars. Book your seat well in advance as slots can sell out in peak season.
Have a backup plan in case your slot is not available, such as other lakes in the area.
Quieter lakes and trails
Peyto Lake, along the Icefields Parkway, is spectacular and a short walk from the road. Johnston Canyon is popular, but going early or late helps a lot.
For fewer people, try a longer trail such as the walk to Lake Agnes Tea House, or choose trails that need a bit more effort.
Banff town without the crush
Banff town gets very busy in the afternoon. Visit the main street in the morning, then spend the afternoon on the Bow River or at a quieter viewpoint such as Surprise Corner.
Hot springs are a great way to end a day, but book timed entry where possible.
Drive the Icefields Parkway
The road between Lake Louise and Jasper is among the most scenic drives in the world. Plan a full day, leave early, and stop often. Fuel up before you set out because services are limited along the route.
Wildlife is common, so keep your distance and never feed animals.
Quick tips
- Book accommodation, parking and shuttles months ahead for July and August.
- Carry bear spray if you plan to hike, and learn how to use it.
- Wear layers, mountain weather changes fast.
- Pack out everything you bring in.
