Five days in Cape Town, planned around the weather

10 MIN READ · BEST FROM NOVEMBER TO MARCH

Cape Town can serve up four seasons in a day. The cable car shuts when the wind picks up, clouds roll over Table Mountain without warning, and a perfect beach morning can turn grey by lunch. The trick is not a fixed itinerary, it is a flexible one built around the sky.

Day 1: Table Mountain on a clear day

Check the forecast and the cable car status first thing in the morning. Table Mountain is the one thing worth moving around the weather for. If the morning is clear, go straight up and spend an hour on top.

If it is cloudy, swap this day with a coastal or museum day and try again later in your trip.

Day 2: Cape Peninsula

Take a full-day drive along the peninsula. Hout Bay, the road around Chapman's Peak, Boulders Beach with its penguins and the Cape of Good Hope make a long but unforgettable loop.

Start early to beat the traffic and the tour buses. Check road conditions before you set out, since some sections are occasionally closed.

Day 3: City, culture and food

Spend the day in the city bowl. The Bo-Kaap neighbourhood is known for its brightly painted houses, and the Company's Garden and nearby museums give a good sense of the city's history.

In the evening, book a table at one of the local restaurants. Cape Town's food scene is excellent value for visitors.

Day 4: Winelands day trip

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are within easy reach of the city. Choose one region, not both, and book tastings in advance. Hire a driver if you plan to taste several wines.

Pair a tasting with a long lunch among the vineyards, it is the most relaxing day of the trip.

Day 5: Flexible day

Keep one day open for whatever the weather allows: a beach morning at Camps Bay or Clifton, a hike up Lion's Head at sunrise, or a visit to Robben Island, which needs advance booking.

Use this day to repeat anything you missed because of clouds or wind.

Quick tips

  • Always check wind and cloud forecasts for Table Mountain before leaving your hotel.
  • Book Robben Island and popular restaurants well ahead.
  • Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • Pack layers, even in summer the evenings cool down fast.

Common questions

Is Cape Town safe for tourists?

Millions visit safely. Stick to busy areas, use ride apps at night, and avoid walking alone in quiet places after dark.

How do I get around?

Ride apps are the simplest in the city. Renting a car makes the peninsula and winelands easier.

When is the best time to go?

November to March is warm and dry, though it is also the busiest and most expensive period.
