Kerala backwaters: how to book a houseboat the right way

9 MIN READ · BEST FROM OCTOBER TO MARCH

A night on a Kerala houseboat is one of the slowest, softest trips you can take in India. Coconut palms slide past, kingfishers dive, and dinner is cooked fresh on board. But not every houseboat is the same, and a few simple choices decide whether you get a dreamy float or an overpriced, noisy cruise.

Choose your base: Alleppey or Kumarakom

Alleppey is the best known gateway and has the largest fleet of boats, which means more choice but also more traffic on the main canals. Kumarakom, near Vembanad Lake, is generally quieter and better for birdwatching.

If you want peace, look at starting from Kumarakom or ask the operator to take the smaller side canals.

Private boat or shared cruise

A private houseboat with an overnight stay is the classic option, and it is worth it if you are two or more people. Day cruises are cheaper but feel rushed and sit on the busiest waterways.

Decide how many bedrooms you need, whether you want air-conditioning, and what meals are included before you compare prices.

What to check before you pay

Ask whether the boat is a traditional kettuvallam style, and look at recent photos and reviews. Confirm the exact pick-up and drop-off times, the route, the meals, and whether fuel and crew are included in the price.

Ask what time the boat moors for the night. Many operators are required to stop cruising by the evening, so the night is spent anchored, which is quiet and pleasant.

What a day on board feels like

You board around midday, get a welcome drink and lunch, and then drift for the afternoon. Local fish, rice and vegetables are cooked on board, often the best Kerala meal of the trip.

In the evening the boat moors near a village. Watch the sky change, listen to the frogs and the water, and sleep to a gentle rocking.

Make it more local

Join a small canoe ride through the narrow canals that big boats cannot enter. Visit a toddy shop or a coir-making village if your operator offers a stop.

Be mindful of plastic. Carry a refillable bottle and ask the crew how waste is handled.

Quick tips

  • Book at least a few days ahead in peak winter months.
  • Confirm that the price covers meals, crew and fuel.
  • Carry sun protection and mosquito repellent.
  • Keep your phone charged, there is limited power on board at night.

Common questions

How many nights should I stay on a houseboat?

One night is enough for most travellers. Two nights can feel repetitive unless you want to fully switch off.

Is the houseboat experience safe for families?

Yes, with a good operator. Check for life jackets and railings, especially with young children.

When is the monsoon?

The rains generally arrive around June, so the backwaters are greenest but wetter then. Cruising is still possible but plans can change.
