Phu Quoc night market: what to eat and when to go

8 MIN READ · BEST FROM NOVEMBER TO APRIL

The night market in Duong Dong town is the place to understand Phu Quoc after dark. Seafood on ice, grills smoking, strings of lights and the smell of garlic and lemongrass drifting down the street. It is loud, a little chaotic and genuinely fun, if you know how to approach it.

Where it is and when to go

The market sets up in the evening in Duong Dong, the main town on the west coast, close to the Dinh Cau area. Stalls begin opening in the late afternoon and the street fills steadily after dark.

Arrive early in the evening. You get your pick of the freshest seafood, shorter queues and room to walk before the crowds come.

What to eat

Start with the grilled items: squid, prawns and scallops with scallion oil or chilli salt are the classic order. Many stalls will grill whatever you point to from the tanks and ice trays.

For something lighter, look for fresh spring rolls, banh mi, noodle soups and the local sweet pancakes. Phu Quoc is known for its fish sauce and pepper, so you will taste both in the cooking.

How to order without getting overcharged

For live seafood, always ask the price per kilo or per piece before anything is cooked, and watch it being weighed. Agree on a total, and keep it in mind when the bill arrives.

Menus with listed prices are the easiest option. If a stall has none, walk a few steps and compare, there are plenty of choices.

Beyond the food stalls

Take time to browse the souvenir stalls, where dried seafood, pepper, pearls and local sauces are sold. Bargaining politely is normal, but do not expect huge discounts.

Finish with a drink from a street-side coffee stall. Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk is the right way to end the night.

Quick tips

  • Carry small notes in Vietnamese dong, change is easier.
  • Choose stalls with a busy crowd of locals, it is the best signal of freshness.
  • Wear light clothes and insect repellent, evenings are humid.
  • Use a taxi or ride app back to your hotel late at night.
